Every autumn someone in the group asks the same question: where can we still go once the clocks change? Lots of campsites shut for the winter, but plenty don’t. We’ve put together a list of UK campsites that say on their own websites that they’re open through the winter and take campervans and motorhomes. We’ve gone from the Highlands to Cornwall, with a stop in Northern Ireland on the way.
Checked 26 October 2026. We read each campsite’s own website again before publishing this list. A few close for a short spell, such as January or Christmas, and we’ve said so under each one. Opening dates and facilities can change, especially in winter, so always call or email the site before you travel.

Winter camping tips from one van owner to another
- Book a hardstanding pitch. Grass gets soft in winter, and hardstanding saves you from getting bogged down.
- Check your hook-up amps. Winter sites often list 10A or 16A. A small heater plus the kettle can trip a low supply, so ask before you plug in.
- Ask what’s open. Shops, bars and some facilities can close out of season, even when the pitches stay open.
- Look after your water. Keep fresh and waste tanks from freezing on cold nights, and carry a spare container.
- Manage condensation. Crack a vent or a window. A damp van is a cold van.
- Pack for darkness. Head torches, spare gas, warm layers and a plan for short daylight hours.
- Check the forecast and the route. Remote and high roads can be affected by snow and wind, so keep your plans flexible.
